Artemis of the Blue is an English-speaking shark VTuber who debuted in October 2020. She streams primarily on Twitch.
She is independently produced and associated with VTuber group Atelier Live.
Introduction Video[]
Personality[]
Artemis is sweet but bold and seemingly very open. She has the tendency to curse which is a contrast to her normally sweet and soft voice. She’s silly and references meme culture often, and is very lively and fun.
Appearance[]
She has long, dark black hair with portruding fins and dark blackish grey eyes. She has sharp teeth and a blue tongue.
History[]
Background[]
Artemis first became interested in becoming a VTuber in March 2020. She initially planned to be a blonde-haired fox shrine maiden character named Ebi Ishi, and contracted Iron Vertex to produce her model. In April or May she woke up in the middle of the night with the idea to make a shark character instead, and asked the modeler to change mid-project. She designed the initial concept in Picrew, and was inspired in part by sharp-toothed Idolmaster character Akira Sunazuka.[1]
She took her name after the Greek goddess Artemis, for three symbolic reasons: Artemis is the goddess of the hunt (and sharks are hunters); of the moon (which controls the tides, thus having a connection to the sea); and of chastity (hololive, her primary influence, are idols and expected to remain pure). Her last name was originally submitted to the modelers as Artemis of the Pacific, but she changed it to of the Blue.[2]
Artemis' YouTube channel was created on 13 August 2020, with her Twitter account created in the same month. Her Twitch account was created on 15 September 2020.[3]
She received a positive reception even before her debut, reaching over 20,000 YouTube subscribers four days before debut, and reportedly reaching 25,000 before her debut.[4] Likewise, she reached over 30,000 Twitter followers before debut.[5]
A popular pre-debut video depicted Artemis brushing her teeth to the song Creative Exercise from Mario Paint. It was posted on Twitter on 26 September and subsequently uploaded to YouTube by a fan account, where it received over hundred thousand views. Artemis described it as "the dumbest video i've ever made".
Debut[]
Artemis debuted on YouTube on 24 October. Her debut stream had a peak viewer count of over 12,000. A technical malfunction caused the scheduled broadcast to fail to go live to viewers, meaning that Artemis performed the entire beginning of her stream before noticing that nobody was watching it. She then archived the stream and started again at another video URL. Artemis later confided that she had not been mentally prepared for the stream, and was thankful for the "rehearsal". Thereafter she wasn't nervous at all until halfway through the stream, when she suffered anxiety and took a thirty minute break.[2]
2020[]
Artemis quickly rose in popularity, reaching 100,000 YouTube subscribers on 6 November.[6] Her Twitch account reached 25,000 followers by the end of 2020, although she had no emotes or subscription option as she was still ineligible for Affiliate status.
Artemis later began streaming on Twitch in addition to YouTube. One of her motivations was to avoid copyright strikes when singing a cover of a song infamous for triggering copyright takedowns.[2]
2021[]
Artemis reached 200,000 YouTube subscribers on 25 January, and celebrated with a YouTube stream on 29 January, in which she revealed a tail addition to her model.
During 2021, her most popular games streamed on Twitch were Eternal Return, VALORANT, and Risk of Rain 2. She streamed approximately 147 hours on Twitch.
2022[]
On 4 June, Artemis held an uncapped subathon. The stream lasted over 51 hours and ended on 6 June. She subsequently took a break from Twitch streaming until her return on 11 June.
On 24 October, Artemis celebrated her two-year anniversary with a Twitch stream in which she made a new outfit reveal. Her new outfit is black and was designed by the same illustrator as Artemis' original model.[7]
Artemis streamed approximately 357 hours on Twitch in 2022. Her most played games were Risk of Rain 2, VALORANT, and Elden Ring.
2023[]
On 27 May, she held a birthday donothon on Twitch.
Artemis streamed 382 hours on Twitch in 2023. Her most popular category by far was Just Chatting, followed by the games The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Path of Exile.
2024[]
On 9 March, she streamed on YouTube for the first time since 2022.[8]
Fans[]
- Her fanbase is officially called "Bottom Feeders".
- She sometimes refers to individual viewers as "Bro".
Quotes[]
- "Why not a dolphin? Dolphins don't have sharp teeth."[1]
- "Is it that I'm gay? No, like you guys already know that well enough. In fact one of the things that happened this these past two weeks is that I've been more gay than I've ever been. More gay than I've ever been before."[2]
- "God, is that really what I sound like? What the fuck? I literally can't stand it. I can't stand it."
- "'are you ever gonna Kabedon us'? There's two problems with that. You'll have to understand, okay. First of all, I'm gay, right? That's the first barrier. The second barrier is that I'm a bottom. So if anything, I'm going to be the one that's getting kabedon'd, right?"
Trivia[]
- Artemis favors meat-based dishes. According to her friend and VTuber Yukiri Kukki on Twitter, Artemis smells like beef.[9]
- Her favorite character from the Monogatari series is Ougi Oshino.
- She is a great white shark.
- She is a bottom.
- She is Asian.
- Artemis wanted to collab with Pikamee, and accomplished this goal on November 5th or 6th 2020 depending on time zone.
- She can play the baritone horn and a little bit of the trombone.
- Her favorite childhood game is Super Mario Sunshine.
- There was an long time running gag about her hating gamers, despite playing games on her stream. The gag seems to have come to an end when she did a 'confession' during a Mario Sunshine stream about finally coming out as a gamer.[10]
- Slimegirl VTuber Leaflit announced plans to consume and absorb competing VTubers, and bought shark jerky in order to "eat" Artemis. In response, Artemis left Leaflit a Twitch donation with a single word message: "Why?"
- Artemis appears in the fan game Artemis' Minesweeper.
- 78.3% of Artemis' Twitter followers would still follow her if her name was Artemis Blartemis.[11]
- As a shark, Artemis is sometimes compared to hololive English member Gawr Gura. However, it is a coincidence that they are both sharks. Artemis made the decision to become a shark VTuber in April or May 2020, before Gura's debut. Artemis was also unfamiliar with any other VTubers outside of hololive and so had not seen any other shark VTuber before. She was initally concerned that people would think she was ripping off Gura. She is not bothered by the coincidence.[1]
- In another coincidence, Artemis revealed her avatar on Twitter on 15 September 2020, one week after Gura's first tweet and only three days after Gura's debut stream.[12][13]
- Other shark VTubers include MANE SHARK, Kivaara, Nami Sakana, MinnowCandy, Mako Sameshima, Moenaomii, and Elex.
- In December 2020, Artemis began the process of adding a tail to her model, which she revealed on 29 January 2021. Artemis added the tail after noticing that all other shark VTubers she could find also had a tail.
- Ironically, Artemis has a fear of the ocean, or what's in it. She has nightmares of drifting on the surface of the ocean.[2]
- After creating her accounts, she discovered there was coincidentally a Beat Saber YouTuber named Artemisblue.[2] Coincidentally, Artemisblue reached 200,000 YouTube subscribers in the same month as Artemis of the Blue.[14]
- Artemis's goal is to be a chill streamer to help people with whatever they're going through.[2]
- According to her analytics, approximately 95% of her viewers are male.[2]
- While Artemis usually appears to be smiling, her model's default mouth state is neutral. When Artemis is smiling, it means she's really smiling, because she loves her viewers so much.[2]
- Artemis was first inspired to become a VTuber after a difficult period in her life, after her partner died unexpectedly. Artemis felt regret as on the night before their death, she declined to play a video game with them. On the anniversary of their death, Artemis found herself cheered up by a clip video of Natsuiro Matsuri talking about wearing band-aids instead of a bra. Artemis was inspired to become a VTuber herself to give people something to cheer them up when facing difficult times.[2]
- Artemis likes maids, and prefers long maid dresses to short.
- Her favorite fish is the mariana snailfish. It is one of the deepest known fish.
