Bao is a female Vietnamese American VTuber who debuted on 30 October 2020. She is now under United Talent[10]. Prior to this, she made music under the name Hikaru Station, reflected in her social media accounts. She currently streams exclusively on Twitch under the username bao (previously hikarustation), while uploading music and stream highlights to her YouTube channel. Previously, she has streamed on YouTube as well.

Profile

Bao was born from seafoam and is a long-lived whale deity and to her knowledge, the last of her kind. She had explored all the oceans and lived through many wars. As a result, she was very lonely and longed for someone to listen to her voice.

Personality

Bao is incredibly kind, giving genuine compliments to others. In addition, she shows a passion for puns and an attunement to the culture of the internet and her fandom, often conversing with members of her Discord. In her debut, she states that hayamafair designed her to be "free and enthusiastic, like a playful little spirit of the ocean".

As she became more comfortable with streaming, Bao's content got progressively more unhinged. Recent events include an "allegation of having a dent on her head that makes her dumber", developing a thirst for army members, and the invention of "The Baoberry".

Appearance

Her princess form has long light blue hair with thick 'bangs' that have white symbol markings on them and red eyes.

Her yandere form has long light pink hair with the same thick 'bangs' but with red symbol markings on them.

History

Background

Bao first teased her Live2D model on Twitter on 30 September 2020. On 11 August 2020, she announced that she was verified on YouTube. Bao's first stream on YouTube was on October 30th, 2020 and November 6th, 2020 on Twitch. Despite this, she has been making content as hikarustation on YouTube since 2015 in which around the same time she joined Twitter and Twitch. Bao's model was drawn by hayamafair with the help of arucelli and was rigged by Brian Tsuii. Bao's design was originally found and purchased by Bao on Pinterest and then revamped by hayamafair.

Her goals as of 30 October 2020 are to make a full original album, conquer her stage fright and be happy.

2020

On 8 November, she released her original song "52 Hearts".

2021

On 26 August, she decided to further rebrand and change some of her account names from hikarustation to bao or baovtuber.[11]

2022

On 23 February, Bao reached 200,000 followers on her Twitch channel.

On 30 May, she debuted her chibi model.[12]

On 20 June, she reached 300,000 followers on her Twitch channel.

On 10 July, she debuted on space.bilibili channel.[13][14]

On 3 September, she debut her new "Summer/Lemon Bao" model, released her new lore and also did her first uncapped subathon.[15][16]

On 4 September, she released her new original song "Citrus Love."

On 19 November, she reached 500,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.[17]

2023

On 5 May, she debut her "Spring Bao" model and released her new original song "Love Me Not."[18]

2024

On 1 March, she debuted her second model, consisting of "Princess Bao" and "Yandere Bao."[19]

On 2 March, she reached 500,000 followers on her Twitch channel.[20]

  • On 27 January 2022, OffKai Expo's Twitter account announced that Bao and many VTubers would appear in "OffKai Expo" which would be held from 29 April to 1 May as guests.[21]
  • On 20 June, she announced that she would be appearing in "Vidcon" which would be held from 22 to 26 June 2022.[22]
  • On 30 November, 2024, she participated in the Dokibird x Oversight Apex Custom as “Team Bao” teaming with Amatsuka Uto and Lia from Phase Connect.[23]

Trivia

  • Bao's design and first song as a VTuber, "52-Hearts" is based on the 52-hertz whale and was helped in it's production by PrettyPatterns and Dictate.
  • Bao's lore video was animated by her friend T3VY and the Japanese script was made by Datenkou
  • Bao's username hikarustation was inspired by her love for the Makoto Shinkai movie 5 Centimetres Per Second for the "station" part. She originally wanted to be named "hikari" for light, but instead chose "hikaru" for sound because it "sounded more androgynous" and she wanted to come across as a place as opposed to a person.
  • Her background music was also made by Cha Latte in 2 days, who also mixed her lore video.
  • Bao revealed that her name is derived from the Vietnamese word "Bão" which means "storm." Since her name is written without accents, fans often associate it with the word "Bao" in "Bánh bao" (name of a food).
  • Apart from hikarustation, Bao has also previously been known as himitsubasa.
  • Bao is trilingual, speaking English, Japanese and Vietnamese.
  • She is proficient in four instruments, being the guitar, ukulele, piano and ocarina.
  • She has some knowledge in animation and motion graphics.
  • She likes singing into seashells, eating jellyfish, the color blue and hot fish people.
  • She dislikes Michael Reeves (apparently because he jams straws into sea creatures' noses), apartment sink water, cold showers, avocados and when the salami lid don't fit.
  • She frequently collaborates with Shylily and Akuma Nihmune (with whom she has a podcast called The Bikini Bottoms), as well as Vienna, with whom she shares the illustrator and modeler.
  • Other VTubers, as well as some of her viewers, like to tease her by referring to her as a pillow princess, something she greatly dislikes.
  • Some of her favorite games are the Zelda franchise and Animal Crossing, but despises Among Us with a passion that burns even underwater.
  • She takes inspiration from musicians such as Harumaki Gohan and Madeon.
  • Her favorite anime is Made in Abyss.
  • Her mascot's name is Pestonini. Pestonini is her and Yuniiho's child, and is a dog-whale hybrid.
  • She has an asthmatic cat named Mitzi and a blue wheeler-corgi mixed dog named Macy (who she claims only likes her dad and hates everyone else), as well as geckos.
  • On 19 November 2020, Bao announced her appreciation about being followed by Mori Calliope of hololive EN.
  • Before deciding to become a whale VTuber, Bao had pursued many different ideas, one of which was a clown VTuber.
