Kaguya Luna (輝夜月) was a female Japanese Virtual YouTuber who debuted in 2017.

Luna was considered one of the Four Heavenly Kings, a group of the most popular and influential VTubers in 2017. She reached the rank of second most subscribed VTuber on YouTube after Kizuna AI, a position she held until the meteoric rise of Gawr Gura in 2020.

Her last video was posted on 29 August 2020, after which she quietly retired.

Luna is energetic, free spirited, and in stark contrast to many popular female VTubers, is quite vulgar and can be insulting to her viewers as well (though it is always in good nature fun).

Appearance

She has white hair in small pigtails and short blunt bangs and light blue eyes. She has two straight black hair accessories and a plus shaped hairclip with a red circle in the middle and black and yellow cat ears.

History

Background

On 10 December 2017, Luna made her YouTube debut with a video titled 【Self-Introduction】Kaguya Luna's Special Skill is Amazing!!!

2017

On 25 December, she reached 100,000 subscribers on YouTube.[1]

2018

In 2018, she signed with Sacra Music, a record label subsidiary of Sony Music, specialized in anison music.

On 30 August, she released her first single, Beyond The Moon. The same day, Goodsmile opened pre-orders for the 1/7 scale Kaguya Luna figure.

On 13 October she launched the apparel brand "Beyond the Moon."

On 15 November she launched LUNA TV, her Nico Nico Douga channel. On the same day she established THE MOON STUDIO, a creative studio in collaboration with her model designer Mika Pikazo.

On 9 December at midnight, she released her second single, Dirty Party. The song is a duo with Ebiber.

On 30 December, the first THE MOON STUDIO VTuber debuted: Pinky Pop Hepburn.

2019

In February, Goodsmile released a 1/7 scale Kaguya Luna figure.

On 28 June, LUNA TV closed.

On 30 September, THE MOON STUDIO closed.

On 5 October, Luna reached 1,000,000 YouTube subscribers. She is the second VTuber to reach this milestone after Kizuna AI.

2020

On 15 January, she released her debut album, xxx (pronounced "batsu batsu batsu").[2][3] In order to promote the album, Luna's virtual second concert at the Zepp was available for PlayStation VR.[4][5] It was later bundled with Hatsune Miku's Virtual Concert with Mika Pikazo doing a promotional illustration.[6]

On 27 January, Mika Pikazo released an artbook dedicated to Luna called Kaguya Luna Art Book (輝夜 月 ART BOOK).[7]

On 29 August, Luna posted what would be her last YouTube video. Her last Tweet was posted on 30 October.

2021

Retirement

On 28 September, Luna's official fanclub announced that it would cease operation by the end of November.[8]

On 30 September, Luna released a statement on Twitter under her previous alias, as the utaite Pmaru-sama. She explained her reasons for retiring as power harassment from management, unfair restriction on her activities as Pmaru-sama, and failure to provide promised salary.[9][10]

Events

  • On 31 August 2018, she held a major live event on ZeppVR, "Beyond the Moon". Luna teased a second live event for ZeppVR as well on 1 May 2019[11]
  • On 22 November 2018, she appeared in a TV show called "Talkin' on the Moon".[12] The show was broadcast on TOKYO MX,[13] where other VTubers already have shows such as Fuji Aoi and KMNZ. Later in that month Kaguya Luna also debuted her monthly web series and talk show LUNA TV, which is broadcast for free on YouTube and Nico Nico Douga and a paid segment only for Nico Premium users.
  • Luna is the image of Japanese Noodles Company Nissin to advertise their products.
    • On December 2018 she advertised the instant noodles Donbei Kitsune Udon (どん兵衛), but the CM was retired due to the unintended controversy created after Luna in the CM bashed the brand competitors in a tasteless way.[14]
    • Nevertheless, in March 2019 she was confirmed as the image for the instant Sosu Yakisoba U.F.O.[15] The announcement was made via a press conference on 15 March 2019.[16] Later that day, the company debuted a 30-second ad with a jingle sung by Luna and music from metal band Maximum the Hormone, a modified version of their song Korekara no Men Katakotteri no Hanashi wo Shiyou (これからの麺カタコッテリの話をしよう～),[17] along with the release of an official promotional website.[18]
  • On 1 May 2019, she held her second virtual concert "Kaguya Luna Live at Zepp VR 2" (輝夜 月LIVE@ZeppVR2),[19] which was also broadcast in real time on the VR platform Cluster.[20]
  • On 24 June 2019, she took the Guinness World Record for "highest altitude smartphone livestream," in conjunction with Nissin Yakisoba U.F.O. Their record is 30.26 km (18.80 mi). The date was chosen to coincide with World UFO Day.[21]

  • Luna refers to her fans as Lunafam. It is a portmanteau of "Luna" and "family."

Groups

  • Luna is part of an unofficial group known as the Four Heavenly Kings, an unofficial group of top VTubers circa 2017. The term originally applied to Kizuna AI, Kaguya Luna, Mirai Akari and Virtual Noja Loli Kitsunemusume Youtuber Ojisan. After Kizuna AI was promoted to Boss due to her phenomenal success, Dennou Shojo Siro filled the gap as fourth member.
    • Luna was the only member of the group who were not originally affiliated with Nico Nico Douga.

Collaboration with Kizuna AI

  • The route to collaboration between Luna and Kizuna AI is long and storied:
    • In December 2017, Luna impersonated the most popular VTubers at the moment including AI.[23]
    • In January 2018, AI released a humorous video "challenging" Luna to do a collaboration.[24]
    • For April Fools 2018, the two "switched bodies" and made videos impersonating each other on each other's channel.[25][26]
    • On 30 June 2018, they finally appeared together during AI's second birthday event.[27]
    • AI has appeared on Luna's showroom streams by making generous donations to her.
    • On 30 October 2018, The body switching gag was repeated again to celebrate Luna's birthday.[28]
    • On 21 November 2018 they finally made a proper collaboration video series, in which they also gave Mirai Akari a date to celebrate her birthday.[29][30]

Trivia

Name

  • Her surname Kaguya is written with the kanji 「輝夜」, meaning "brightness" and "night." The name references the Japanese folk tale called The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, or The Tale of Princess Kaguya. The story is about a princess from the moon.
  • Her given name Luna is written with the kanji 「月」, meaning "moon," usually read "tsuki." Luna is the Latin for "moon" and the scientific name for Earth's moon.
  • Because of her style of talking, Japanese fans gave her the nickname "Neck Choked Hamtaro" (首絞めハム太郎). Her western fans gave her the nickname "Cocaine-chan" (コカインちゃん).
  • She once acknowledged that the cleavage window in her dress makes her chest look like a pair of buttocks, thus earning the nickname "Chestbutt" (胸にケツ).[31] It annoys her every time she is called this.

Miscellaneous

  • In some fan arts and memes, she loves to drink Strong Zero, a Japanese alcohol produced by Suntory, because she talks like she's drunk and the colors of her avatar is similar to the can of Strong Zero. She even jokingly wants to be part of a Suntory TV ad.[32]
  • Her animated outro shows her being hit in the head with a censored object. This seems to be a reference to one of her videos where she talks about being hit in the head with a package of tofu. The censored object is a can of Suntory's alcoholic beverage Strong Zero.
  • Apart from using the tempura shrimp emoji in her tweets, she also uses the ASCII emoticon ∠( 'ω')／
  • She calls some friends by nicknames:
    • She calls Kizuna Ai "Oyabun" (親分, lit. Boss). This is due to Ai's phenomenal success on YouTube, which saw her reach #1 most subscribed Virtual YouTuber.
      • Ai calls Luna "Tsuki-chan" (つきちゃん), from the common reading of the kanji used in her name, meaning "moon."
    • She calls Dennou Shojo Siro "Iruka-senpai" (イルカ先輩). It references her nickname "white dolphin" from the sound she makes when she laughs, and refers to her as "senpai," "senior," because Siro debuted before her.
    • She calls Mirai Akari "Mii-chan-senpai" (みーちゃん先輩).
  • She her character designer Mika Pikazo founded a company called THE MOON STUDIO, which serves as her official agency and creator studio.[33] The Moon Studio ended activities on 30 September 2019, and since then she is represented directly by the company behind her concept, Vic inc.
  • On recent videos Luna has now a sidekick called "Justin Ebiber" (ジャスティン・エビーバー), which is a talking tempura shrimp.
  • Her special skill is identifying someone's blood type even if they have never met before.
  • In a poll during the show Special Show: AI Connects to the World ("Notokuban"), broadcast on 1 December 2018, Kaguya Nana was rated #7 top Virtual Youtuber.
  • Toboso Kuroi and Omaru Polka both cite Kaguya Luna as among their inspirations to become a VTuber.
  • Hinasaki Yuma and Yoruno Neon have been compared to Kaguya Luna in terms of having similar sounding voices.
  • Other VTubers named Luna include hololive's Himemori Luna, Nemu (formerly known as Luna the Magikarp), WACTOR member Rurine Luna, and Amane Luna.
