Kii Ui first appeared on the YouTube channel of Japanese musician Kou Ogata. Ogata created the channel on 28 July 2007, where he plays music played with Irish traditional instruments including the tin whistle, low whistle, mandolin, bouzoki, concertina, bodhrán, and fiddle. Ogata's music included covers of popular songs from video games and anime.

On 22 June, Ui appeared in an introduction video. Her first live broadcast took place on 3 August.
2021[]
On 9 January, Ui made their last livestream.
On 19 November, Ui made their last video appearance on the channel and last Twitter post. As of 2025, the character has made no further appearances on the channel, although the channel continues to post music videos.

- Kii Ui's name is written with the kanji 「樹衣うい」. "Kii" is a Japanese surname, but not commonly written with this kanji, which mean "tree" and "clothes". "Ui" is a Japanese girl's name.
- Kii Ui's name is a pun on "kiwi".

- In her introductory video, Ui reveals that she is a 「バ美肉」, "babiniku" streamer, or a female character portrayed by a man. Ui uses a voice changer to produce a high-pitched voice.
