NIJISANJI EN is an overseas branch of NIJISANJI Project, consisting of English-speaking Livers. Unlike other overseas branches, it is not associated with any specific country and is aimed at English-speaking audiences around the world.
Luxiem, the branch's first all-male wave, saw explosive popularity ever since their debut. They are considered as proof of a large audience for English-speaking male VTubers.
History
Background
On 22 June 2020, Ichikara Inc. rebranded their India branch, "NIJISANJI IN", as "NIJISANJI EN".[1] Although a separate branch from the current incarnation of "NIJISANJI EN", this was the NIJISANJI Project's first attempt to market to English-speaking countries. The India-based branch was eventually rebranded back to "NIJISANJI IN" on 27 November.[2]
On 1 December, Ichikara Inc. announced the official launch of NIJISANJI's first wave of auditions for English-speaking countries. Unlike other overseas branch auditions, the new branch was not identified by name at the time, and no VTuber designs were publicly shown. Auditions were open until 15 December.[3][4]
2021
On 12 May, Ichikara Inc. re-launched a previously defunct branch of the NIJISANJI Project for English-speaking countries, "NIJISANJI EN", with NIJISANJI's official English Twitter revealing the branch's new wave, LazuLight.[5][6] These Livers were previously selected during the auditions in December 2020. LazuLight began their activities on 16 May with a special debut program hosted by NIJISANJI ID's Hana Macchia and Bonnivier Pranaja, and an original song called "Diamond City Lights", produced by Mafumafu and with story lyrics by NIJISANJI Liver Hoshikawa Sara.
On 18 June, ANYCOLOR (previously Ichikara Inc.) opened new auditions for NIJISANJI EN. Unlike the first set of auditions, separate auditions were held for male and female Livers, with female auditions lasting until 11 July and male auditions until 1 August.[7]
On 14 July, NIJISANJI EN announced its second wave, OBSYDIA.[8] These Livers were selected from the same December 2020 auditions as LazuLight rather than the auditions that opened in June. OBSYDIA officially started their activities on 18 July with a special debut program hosted by LazuLight, and an original song called "Black Out", produced by TeddyLoid and with story lyrics by NIJISANJI Liver Ryushen.
On 6 October, NIJISANJI EN announced its third wave, Ethyria.[9] These Livers were selected from the June 2021 female auditions. Ethyria officially started their activities on 9 October with a special debut program hosted by OBSYDIA, and an original song called "God sees all", produced by Chibanyan.[10]
On 17 December, NIJISANJI EN announced its fourth wave, Luxiem.[11] This was NIJISANJI EN's first all-male group, selected from the June 2021 male auditions. On 24 July, Vox Akuma became the first Liver in NIJISANJI EN and the fourth Liver in NIJISANJI overall to reach 1 million subscribers. He is the second-fastest member of NIJISANJI to reach this milestone, behind Hyakumantenbara Salome.[16]
On 20 July, NIJISANJI EN announced its sixth wave, ILUNA.[17][18] This was NIJISANJI EN's first mixed-gender group, selected from the March 2022 auditions. On 6 August, NIJISANJI EN's official Twitter announced that multiple NIJISANJI EN Livers would participate in NIJIFes 2022 for the first time, including a special 3D showcase from LazuLight alongside Hana Macchia.[19][20]
On 12 August, ANYCOLOR opened a new set of auditions for NIJISANJI EN for male gamers. Auditions were open until 30 August (15:59 JST).[21]
On 29 September, NIJISANJI EN's official Twitter announced that many NIJISANJI EN Livers scheduled to appear at NIJIFes 2022 would be unable to participate due to "unforseen circumstances."[22] These circumstances were later revealed to be visa processing issues.
On 1-2 October, Elira Pendora, Petra Gurin, Selen Tatsuki, and Shu Yamino participated in NIJIFes 2022, marking NIJISANJI EN's first appearance at NIJIFes. All members of Ethyria, who were not physically present at NIJIFes, also appeared in a prerecorded panel. Elira showcased her 3D model on Day 2, becoming the first EN Liver to receive 3D models. It was also announced that NIJISANJI would begin rolling out 3D debuts for overseas Livers in the near future.
On 6 December, NIJISANJI EN announced its seventh wave, XSOLEIL.[23][24] These Livers were selected from the same March 2022 auditions as ILUNA. On 22 June, NIJISANJI EN announced its eighth wave, together known as Krisis.[29] Krisis began their activities on 24 June with a special debut program hosted by Mysta Rias and Rosemi Lovelock. Unlike previous NIJISANJI EN waves, and similar to many Japanese waves, this wave did not debut with an original song or logo, and their unit name was not officially featured in debut announcements. These Livers were stated to "share the same world" with the eight Japanese Livers from Oriens and Dytica, who debuted in March & April 2023.[30]
On 24 August, ANYCOLOR opened auditions for NIJISANJI EN. Auditions were open until 19 September (JST).[31]
On 2 October, a theme song for NIJISANJI's and NIJISANJI EN's hero-themed waves (Oriens, Dytica, and Krisis), called "SUPER DUPER", was announced. Unlike debut songs, this original song was sung by Higuchi Kaede from NIJISANJI and Ren Zotto from NIJISANJI EN instead of the Livers represented by the song.[32]

The group began their activities on 27 October with a special debut program hosted by Maria Marionette and Luca Kaneshiro.[33] The group's theme song, "Desire", premiered soon after, sung by Enna Alouette and Maria Marionette.

On 3 November, during Reimu Endou's birthday stream, the unofficial group called NijiUK created by Petra Gurin, Reimu Endou, Enna Alouette and Millie Parfait, announced that after a proposal of the members to management and the approval, the group would become an official sub-unit in NIJISANJI EN and would be renamed to Zuttoღo (meaning 'forever friends' in English). This marks the first official sub-unit in NIJISANJI EN. All members will still continue in their original waves OBSYDIA and Ethyria.[34]
On 17 November ANYCOLOR opened a new set of auditions for NIJISANJI EN, this time around focused on acting. Auditions were open until 11 December (JST).[35]
2024
On 5 February, NIJISANJI EN announced the termination of Selen Tatsuki's contract.[36] This announcement, alongside subsequent events, such as joint statement from their talents, led to a major controversy and public outcry, with noticeable drop in subscriber count across all the NIJISANJI EN channels.
As of 22 February, NIJISANJI EN channels lost over 400,000 subscribers combined, with Elira Pendora, Selen Tatsuki, Enna Alouette, Millie Parfait, and Vox Akuma who lost over 30,000 each. Livers Elira Pendora and Rosemi Lovelock lost their major milestones of 600,000 and 500,000 subscribers respectfully.
On 5 March, the previously advertised attendance of Ethyria members at "OffKai Expo 2024 Gen 3 VTuber" convention was cancelled,[37] as OffKai Expo was concerned that recent events occurring around NIJISANJI EN during this time had resulted in an environment where Ethyria's appearance would not provide a positive conference experience for ANYCOLOR Inc.'s Livers. or attendees.[38]
On 29 March, ANYCOLOR announced its long-awaited AR Live concert, "COLORS", after the event was initially canceled in 2023. The event would be held on 14 April. The concert featuring LazuLight, OBSYDIA, Ethyria, Luxiem, and Noctyx members; with Ethryia, Luxiem, and Noctyx (except for Fulgur, who will be 2D due to health circumstances) showing their 3D models for the first time. As for the full show, international audiences can purchase their tickets on Stagecrowd, Japanese viewers on niconico Live, and Chinese viewers on bilibili.[39]
On 14 April, NIJISANJI announced a new project called "NIJI ENcounter" which will release a new original song every month with two randomly picked livers and the theme of “NIJISANJI EN Livers” and “Music Creators” coming together.

Trivia
- The NIJISANJI EN official YouTube channel was originally a "NIJISANJI World" channel that posted English-translated clips of Japanese Livers for international audiences. After LazuLight's debut, the channel shifted its focus to supporting the new EN branch and stopped posting new clips of Japanese Livers, though older clips are still viewable. On 11 February 2023, the channel started posting clips of JP Livers again as part of its series "1 min NIJISANJI."[46]
- After LazuLight, the NIJISANJI EN official Twitter account makes a seemingly out-of-context Tweet before announcing the next wave:
- They tweeted only ":)" before OBSYDIA's reveal.[47]
- "uwu" for Ethyria.[48]
- "All according to KEIKAKU" for Luxiem.[49]
- "Hehe! :)" for Noctyx.[50]
- "the moon is beautiful tonight 🌚🌝" for ILUNA.[51]
- "☀️the sun approaches its zenith☀️" for XSOLEIL.[52]
- "Prepare for landing..." for Krisis.[53]
- "I sharpen my claws, I don my mask, I polish my sword, I seek my desire." for TTT.[54]
- "An image of a black gate" for Denauth.[55]
- So far, Denauth is the first and only wave to have their out-of-context Tweet be an image instead of text.
- Noor from the Original NIJISANJI EN was the one to interview Finana Ryugu before she officially joined new NIJISANJI EN.[56]
- OBSYDIA's existence was teased even before LazuLight debuted. In the promotional illustration for LazuLight's debut, purple-tinted images of OBSYDIA's torsos are projected onto the buildings. Selen Tatsuki can be seen in the upper-left corner, while Rosemi Lovelock and Petra Gurin can be seen on the building to the right of Finana Ryugu.

The character silhouettes for Wave 3's audition form
- Ethyria was the first, and so far only, NIJISANJI EN wave in which applicants could audition for pre-designed characters. The audition form contained silhouettes of the designs plus excerpts of each characters' lore.
- Before Ethyria was announced, fans would sometimes joke about NIJISANJI EN naming their waves after Minecraft, as both lapis lazuli and obsidian are blocks in Minecraft.
- Alternate ideas for Luxiem's name included "Royal Flash", suggested by Ike Eveland, and "Prismarine", a Minecraft reference.
- ILUNA and XSOLEIL are two of only three NIJISANJI waves in which all of their respective members attend the same school, with the first such wave being the main branch's Selene Drama Club.
- NIJISANJI EN Livers debut with the equivalent of 2.0 models compared to other branches, eliminating the need for 2.0 Brushups later on. They are still eligible to apply for 3.0 Brushups (selected by roulette).[note 1]
- As with other branches, NIJISANJI EN Livers receive a free outfit as a reward for reaching 50,000 subscribers before getting more outfits via a point system. However, because EN Livers tend to reach this milestone very quickly, each wave so far has revealed their second outfits together and share a common theme.
- LazuLight's second outfits are all Japanese-styled, featuring kimono-like tops, obi sashes, and frilly skirts.
- OBSYDIA's second outfits are all military-themed.
- Ethyria's second outfits are royalty-themed and based on playing card suits.
- Luxiem's second outfits are themed around the "past" and represent younger versions of themselves.
- Noctyx's second outfits are themed around the present versions of the livers.
- ILUNA's second outfits unlike previous waves, have no theme as all of the members already shared the school theme. Instead, each member has their own individual outfit released separately, similar to how non-EN branches work in NIJISANJI.
- XSOLEIL's second outfits are all black-and-white themed.[57]
- Krisis' second outfits are all casual-themed.[58]
- Many members of NIJISANJI EN have proven to be poor drivers, leading to the hashtag #nijicantdrive.
