Production and release[]
Clues that Takanashi Kiara was preparing to release a new song began to emerge on X in mid-March 2025, when she and Monii cryptically discussed lyrics.[1] Monii had worked as a lyricist on several of Kiara's original songs.
PERFUME made a surprise premiere during KIARA & FRIENDS: H!P Cover Song Spring Concert, a 15-member hololive English event which aired on Kiara's YouTube channel on 20 April 2025. The concert was originally planned for December, but delayed until April, with the result that four members had to pull out of the event.[2] Ultimately, the concert featured all current hololive English members except for Hakos Baelz and pending graduates Gawr Gura and Nanashi Mumei. Past graduate and affiliate Watson Amelia also made a cameo appearance.
Choreography was produced by Miyuki Nishijima, who previously choreographed Kiara's MIRAGE. The six silhouetted backing dancers in the music video were played by ASUKA Yazawa, Oishi Moe, Chisato Takahashi, Minori, RISAKO, and LISA-P.
The pink outfit in the music video was designed by Kiara herself, with model by VCUSTOM3D and nails by mimi (meotashie). The swimsuit design is by fellow hololive English member Raora Panthera, and model by SIvan. Album art was provided by advarcher.
Kiara directed most scenes of the music video herself, coming up with the initial vision while traveling on international flights. She described the song's theme as "about feeling good in your skin and good with yourself." She drew more inspiration from K-pop for this song, once again choosing to work with Vocaloid producer KIRA, who had worked on Kiara's English-language songs since SPARKS. Due to the delay in release, Kiara had six or seven months to work on the song, as opposed to the more usual three months.[3]
In an aftertalk stream, she discussed the song's development and played a complete acapella version.
The song was made available on YouTube Music on 21 April, and officially released at midnight on 22 April 2025.
