Tokino Sora (ときのそら, 時乃そら, 時乃空, Lit. Sky of Time) is a female Japanese Virtual YouTuber and the founding member of hololive. While she debuted alone way before generations were established, she is currently part of "hololive 0th gen" alongside fellow solo debutants: Roboco-san, Sakura Miko, Hoshimachi Suisei and AZKi.

She loves singing and horror games, and her dream has been to "hold a live concert at Yokohama Arena" since the very beginning. She had her major debut at Victor Entertainment in March 2019. On her road to pro idol, she played a role in the TV show "Watanuki-san Chi” while also running a podcast known as "SoraAoto!" She also takes an active role in other genres. Personality
Tokino Sora is an easy-going, happy and comforting person whose personality has led many fans to call her "Tokino Sora Mama!" (ときのそらママ) because of her motherly attitude. Directly according to her, she would love her fans to call her Sora-chan or simply Sora with no honorifics, as she does not think a lofty title or suffix like -sama is befitting of her.
Born in Tokyo, she is the member in hololive who most closely fits the image of a "proper" idol, since most of the other members have become infamous for causing mayhem and goofing off. But in spite of the other idols grinding the stereotypical image of an idol to dust and beyond, many in hololive respect Sora and the genuineness of her personality to the point of seeing her as seiso or holy, to which she prefers to be seen as just an ordinary idol.
Unlike many other idol groups in the industry, and like many others in hololive, nothing about Sora's personality is faking purity. In fact, even in rare less-than-pure instances, such as losing her temper, she is often toothless and harmless if a bit stern. But generally, Sora's mindset in many ways resembles that of a well behaved, innocent child.
Sora loves horror games, and she does not get scared by them. She also loves Rhythm games and live streaming for her fans. She is not very good at rote learning and Oogiri (a game consisted of giving funny answers to several themes). Additionally, she gets easily lost when someone mentions English wordplay jokes and slang terms in her chat and sometimes is teased with the name "Soda-chan" due to her fondness of sweets and because her design looks like a can of Pepsi, leading to the playful, comically cute responds of Soda-chan Janai! or No Soda, No Soda!.
But when it comes to anything to do with rhythm and sound, Sora's passion for the art drives her to be quite the perfectionist. For example, in hololive's promotional campaign with medicinal candy brand e-ma, Sora would dance to the brand's theme song with better precision, allure, bounce and expressiveness than either Suisei or Aqua. In other instances, she perfectly sings a majority of the covers she does in her 【I tried to sing】series, some of which that are difficult for a normal person to sing as the vocals are mostly done in VOCALOID. She has published several covers, including collaborations with fellow VTubers and even the release of a debut album with a major record label.
True to her pure hearted nature, Sora dreams of holding a concert at Yokohama Arena, the city where her mother was born.
Appearance
Sora has long brown hair falling down below her shoulders, decorated with a golden star outlined/hollow hairpin complemented with a red ribbon to the left and a golden diamond shaped one to the right. Sora's eyes are brown, however while performing she uses blue contacts most of the time.
Sora wears a sleeveless white shirt with golden outlines and blue buttons that leaves her midriff exposed. The shirt is decorated with a red bow complemented with golden ornaments. On top of it, she uses an open blue vest also with a golden outline. Her wristbands are white. Sora uses a blue mini skirt with a white layer that goes around her back decorated at the sides with bows on the same color which have two golden stars at the longer tips. Sora has blue high socks and short boots.
History
Background
Tokino Sora's foray into streaming began in a conversation with Friend A about her desire to debut as an idol. The group "hololive" did not yet exist at this point. The concept of a Virtual YouTuber was relatively new, with Kizuna AI establishing the concept in November 2016.[8] In March 2017, Cover Corporation showcased technology for real-time motion capture and live streaming, an innovation over Kizuna AI, whose videos were pre-recorded.
Sora's Twitter account was created on 29 June 2017. Her Nico Nico Douga channel ch2633437 was created on 30 August 2017.
Her first livestream took place on Nico Nico Douga as livestream lv306170648, on 7 September 2017 from 7pm to 7:30pm Japan time. The total view count was 110 users, and 191 chat comments were posted.[9] However, the actual view count my be lower, as Nico Nico Douga counted a viewer multiple times if they left and rejoined the stream. According to legend, most of the viewers were staff or Sora's acquaintances; the stream had only 13 actual viewers, later referred to as the Knights of the Round Table.[8] A rumor holds that Sakura Miko was one of the Knights.
Her YouTube channel was created on 7 September 2017 at 12:02:42 Japan time, only a few hours before her Nico Nico Douga debut. A VOD of the debut stream was uploaded to YouTube the same day at 21:21:48 Japan time.[10]
2017
On 17 October, she received her second 3D model, with a new hairstyle, with curls to the sides which became her standard and most recognized hairstyle. She also debuted her background.[11]
On 26 October, to celebrate 100 YouTube subscribers, she received another model update. Her blue hair pin was changed to yellow, and the yellow ribbon on her blouse was changed to red. In which was described by A-chan to be a "camera update", Sora received jiggle physics.[12]
On 31 October, her mascot Teddy bear "Ankimo" made its first appearance. Sora also appeared in a recolor of her standard model with bats to celebrate Halloween.[13][14]
On 25 December, she received another outfit recolor to celebrate the holidays, with her clothes being mostly red, with a green ribbon.[15] Sora's popularity grew during this stream in an event later referred to as the Christmas Miracle, in which major VTuber Dennou Shojo Siro postponed a stream due to technical issues and directed her audience instead to other VTubers, including the relatively unknown Tokino Sora. The stream was also noticed by users of 4chan, which introduced a number of foreign users. Sora's YouTube channel had only reached 1,000 subscribers before the stream, but by the end had approximately three times that, and by the end of the year would reach around 10,000.[16]
2018
On 5 January, she debuted another recolor. In this costume her clothes have a sparkling effect, complemented by a red had with a star and an interrogation sign on top.[17]
On 14 February, she received a new costume: a casual outfit, with a pink blouse, skirt and a fuzzy brown coat.[18]
Around the start of March, Sora reached 100,000 YouTube subscribers. She would retain the position of most subscribed hololive member until late 2019, when she would be overtaken by Shirakami Fubuki.[16]
On 18 May, she teased on her Twitter account an announcement for her next stream. The same day, she debuted her third 3D model. With this model, her outfit is updated, now with a star hairpin where her previous yellow one used to be, and a new one on the left side. Probably the most prominent change was the change in her eye color from brown to blue.[19][20] This model later received a costume update with even more ornaments. This costume was mainly used for Sora's concerts.[21]
On 25 December, her new 3D model received a color variant to celebrate the holidays, similar to her previous model.[22]
On 27 December, she showcased another color variant, this time as a separate character named "Yuki no Sora," with light blue hair and dress and a snowflake hairpin on the opposite site of Sora's star hairpin. Originally Yuki didn't talk but she was reintroduced on another video later.[23][24]
2019
On 1 January, she debuted a new 3D costume, a kimono in celebration of the new year.[25]
On 10 January, she announced that she would be releasing her first album Dreaming.[26]
On 21 February, she announced that she would be part of the main cast of the upcoming TV Tokyo dorama Watanuki-san Chi No playing as "Watanuki Ichika" alongside Hibiki Ao, and newcomer Sarugakucho Futaba. The show has two seasons.
On 27 March, she debuted her first studio album titled Dreaming!
On 12 August, she announced on her Twitter account that she would get a swimsuit costume. On 14 August she debuted this costume during a stream.[27][28]
On 6 October, she held her first live concert "Dream!"
On 19 December, she announced on her Twitter account preorders for her photo book "Sorabi Yori" (そらびより) and on 27 December she announced her new mini album "My loving". It is worth noticing that the official artwork of the album features Sora with her original brown eyes.[29]
2020
On 24 January, along with the other hololive girls up to the third generation, she debuted an idol outfit that matches with the rest of the girls at hololive's 1st fes. Nonstop Story.[30][31] As she previously had another idol outfit.
On 14 February her photo book "Sorabi Yori" (そらびより) was released.[32]
On 24 March, she released her new mini album "My loving."[33]
On 20 August, she announced that she would be releasing her second album On Stage!.[34]
On 5 September, she announced on her Twitter account a commemorative stream, celebrating the third anniversary since her debut.[35] On 7 September, she held her commemorative stream, remembering her evolution through the years. She debuted her fourth 3D model, with more detailed eyes and improved hair movement. Her updated outfit now includes golden ornaments on the neck of her blouse, on her ribbon and shoes. The white "tail" of her skirt now has stars on the tips, and the parts that go to the sides now resemble wings.[36]
On 21 October, she released her second album titled On Stage!
On 29 November, she held her second live concert "Parallel Time."[37]
On 21 December, Sora participated on stage 1 of "hololive 2nd fes. Beyond the Stage."[38]
2021
On 5 January, Sora reached 600,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.[39]
On 1 March, she announced on her Twitter account that she would get a new costume.[40]
On 3 March, Sora debuted her second costume using her fourth 3D model. In this casual costume, Sora has her original brown eyes (although concept illustration shows that she can have blue eyes as well) and her hair is now stylized with a ponytail. She wears a pink and white blouse, bracelets one with a little star and another with a little Ankimo head, and a brown long skirt accompanied by a brown belt and shoes with pink ribbons. Sora also has the option to wear glasses with this costume.[41]
On 18 March, she reached 700,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel during a stream.[42]
On 10 July, Sora reached 800,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.[43]
On 21 October, Victor Music's Twitter account announced that Sora would release her third album (cover album) Re:Play.[44]
On 24 November, she released her third album titled Re:Play.
On 1 November, hololive's Twitter account announced that Sora would also perform her third live "Tokino Sora Theatrical Cover Live「Role:Play」" scheduled for 1 January 2022.[45]
On 6 December, Sora reached 900,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.[46]
On 31 December, Sora's YouTube channel gained a Official Artist Channel status, being third to have one in hololive overall after Mori Calliope and Rikka.
2022
On 22 January, she held her third live concert "Role:Play."[47]
On 8 February, Sora released a new Official Fan Club website moving away from NicoNico.[48]
On 15 May, during her birthday celebration stream, Sora debuted her third costume using her fourth 3D model. Her hair has a ponytail decorated with a white see through bow. Like her casual outfit, Sora uses a crossed dark blue and white ribbon falling from below her signature star hairpin. In this costume Sora wears a shoulderless, long white dress with motifs in dark blue and gold. Sora uses dark blue long socks with a white bow on her right thigh and darker blue shoes also decorated with white bows. The dress includes a long low cape decorated with four golden bows, she has white bows tied to her wrists, both the cape and the white bows can be removed.[49]
Sora also announced the release of her fourth album "「Sign」."
On 27 July, Sora reached 1,000,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, making her the 31st hololive member to reach this milestone, and the third member of 0th Gen to reach it.[50]
On 28 July, Sora debuted a new hairstyle for her casual costume. She can now use low twintails.[51]
On 17 August, as part of the "hololive Summer 2022" event, Sora debuted her second 3D swimsuit. Unlike the original swimsuits from 2019 that had individual designs, these swimsuits are meant to be matching outfits similar to the 3D idol costumes. The swimsuits come in two types one with thin straps for the top and a diagonal cut mini skirt and the other one has ruffled straps in the top and an even mini skirt. Both versions are white with various patterns including hololive's and Holoearth's logos, hearts and sparks. The swimsuits are personalized by including different colors to match each talent. Additionally, they have the option to wear a hoodie.[52]
On 21 August, continuing the "hololive Summer 2022" event, Sora debuted her 3D yukata.[53] Like other 3D costumes the yukatas have a variety of styles that hololive members can choose from. The yukatas come in various colors and patterns including fireworks, flowers and goldfish.[54]
On 7 September, her fourth album Sign was released.[55] She also announced her fourth live concert "Tokino Sora 5th Anniversary Live: Sora to Toki no Milky Way."[56]
On 7 October, Sora debuted a new hairstyle. She uses loose hair with small high twintails that have small buns at the top.[57]
On 9 October, Sora debuted a new accessory for her 2022 birthday dress, a light green sweater decorated with pink ribbons.[58]
On 30 October, Sora reappeared using her classic Halloween recolor from 2017 updated for her fourth 3D model.[59]
On 19 November, she held her fourth live concert "5th Anniversary Live: Sora to Toki no Milky Way" which has 2 parts which are daytime and nighttime.[60]
On 26 December, hololive's Twitter account announced that Sora would get a new kimono for new year.[61]
2023
On 1 January, during "hololive production COUNTDOWN LIVE 2022▷2023 -hololive side-" Sora debuted her new year furisode. Her furisode is blue with a flower pattern. The obi is golden but turns dark blue on the right side as if the golden portion is made of stars.[62]
On 22 February, her second EP Beyond was released.[63]
On 18 March, Sora debuted her new 3D idol costume during hololive 4th fes. "Our Bright Parade" DAY 1.[64]
On 24 May, hololive's Twitter account announced that Sora would get a new 3D costume.[65]
On 26 May, Sora debuted her new 3D costume. Sora wears a black and white hoodie, with another Ankimo and Nun nun print on the black section. Sora wears a black cap decorated with a print of her mascots Ankimo and Nun nun. Sora uses a necklace with a silver star and a choker. She wears black low boots with laced black socks. On her left sleeve the jacket has Sora's star logo. The jacket lining is blue and also features her logo. The hoodie's cap is black and has bear ears.[66]
On 21 July, Sora debuted a new hairstyle for her hoodie costume. She has her bangs styled to the sides exposing her forehead. Sora also has her hair tied up in a bun.[67]
On 30 July, as part of the "hololive Summer 2023" event, during a karaoke relay, Sora debuted her third 3D swimsuit. The 2023 swimsuits are inspired in a sailor uniform. Members wear a two layered swimsuit; the first layer is blue from the straps going down diagonally to the center where each member has a mostly blue bow but one of the sides and the brooch are in one color representative of each member. The rest of the top is white. The edge has a semicircular cut. The lower piece of the first layer has two variants, one is a two layered blue skirt decorated with a white belt, a golden chain with some decorations hanging from it and a bow to the left and planks to the right. The second version is mostly the same, but they wear blue shorts instead of a mini skirt. Sora uses the mini skirt. The second layer of the outfit is a matching striped bikini in white and another color depending on the member.[68]
On 14 October, Sora debuted a new hairstyle for her hoodie costume. She uses low braided twintails. Sora also debuted a pink variant of the hoodie.[69]
On 13 November, as part of the "Hoshimatic Project," she debuted new 3D lesson wear. She uses a white short shirt with black wide lines at the shoulders and lower edge with her name in it and a black top underneat, the shirt is decorated with a small triangle representing the hololive brand and its color is different among the members. The outfit has variants, some members wear black pants while others wear shorts. She uses the shorts variant.[70]
On 20 December, duet album with AZKi as SorAZ "Futurity Step" was released.[71]
2024
On 27 January, Sora held a duet live concert with AZKi as SorAZ "First Gravity" which has 2 parts which are daytime and nighttime.[72]
On 6 March, her mini-album STAR STAR☆T was released.[73]
On 6 April, she held her fifth live concert "6th Anniversary Party -Keep Shinin’-" which has 2 parts which are daytime and nighttime.[74]

- On 17 December 2018, she participated with other VTubers in the AR event Tubeout! at Tower Records Shibuya store.
- On 27 November 2019, she made an appearance in hololive's collaboration with Azur Lane as one of the characters, alongside Nakiri Ayame, Ookami Mio, Natsuiro Matsuri, Murasaki Shion, Minato Aqua and Shirakami Fubuki, she was available from 27 November to 17 December.[75]
- On 28 January 2020, it was announced on Dengekionline that she would make an appearance in the game Neptunia Virtual Stars as one of the VTuber guest characters alongside Roboco, Sakura Miko, Shirakami Fubuki, Minato Aqua, Yuzuki Choco, Inugami Korone, Shirogane Noel and Houshou Marine.[76]
- On 24 November 2020, Taito Online Crane's Twitter account announced a collaboration with Sora in which, she would appear in a collectable cushion for a limited time, the event started on 27 November.[77]
- On 25 December 2020, again in Taito Online Crane's Twitter account it was announced a second collaboration with Sora, this time big plushies modelled after her were limited time prizes, the plushie was available starting from 4 January.[78]
- On 8 January 2021, hololive's Twitter account announced the production of a Tokino Sora figurine wearing her swimsuit, the figurine is being produced by Bandai's brand Gashapon.[79]

- On 16 December 2021, Taito's Twitter account announced a collabration with Sora in which, her voice as navigator would be added alongside Gawr Gura. Also wireless earphones with their voices are announced as part of the collaboration.[81][82]
- On 17 December 2021, hololive's Twitter account announced a collaboration with TOKYO SKYTREE Town (R) featuring Yukihana Lamy, Oozora Subaru, Yozora Mel, Tokino Sora, Hoshimachi Suisei, Yuzuki Choco, Tsunomaki Watame, Himemori Luna, Amane Kanata, and Tokoyami Towa in limited eddition merchandise, cafe, games, and other activities. The event was held from 17 December 2021 to 31 January 2022.[83][84]
- On 1 March 2022, she made an appearance in hololive's collaboration with Tokyo 7th Sisters alongside AZKi and Hoshimachi Suisei. A new version of her original song "Miren Record" is also made available in the game which was sung together with Ai Hoshikage.[85]
Mascot and Fans
- Her mascot is called Ankimo (あん肝), a walking teddy bear who used to accompany her and mimic her movements during her earlier livestreams. He was frequently depicted as being buried, due to technical difficulties that made him to clip into the ground and he look like he was buried in the floor. Currently he can be seen in Sora's bedroom.
- Her fanbase is officially called "Sora-tomo" (そらとも) likely from "Sora no tomodachi," or Sora's friends. Her fans are represented by "Nun nun" white blobs with a face.
- Sora prefers to be called simply "Sora-chan" by her fans.

- Notable units and groups Sora is part of:
- "SorAZ," alongside AZKi. Both are good friends, they have sung on stage, MVs and in EPs multiple times as this unit, while it used to be rare for AZKi to collab with other hololive members before her transfer to the main branch, Sora and her collab from time to time in each other's channels. On 8 November 2023, hololive's Twitter account announced that SorAZ would have their mayor debut as a unit as both are signed with Victor Entertaiment. The unit would officially debut on 27 January 2024 with the live "First Gravity" at "CLUB CITTA" in the Kanagawa prefecture.[86][87] Sora also helped her when AZKi finally decided to join the hololive JP Minecraft server.[88]
- "Hoshimatic Project," alongside Hoshimachi Suisei, Natsuiro Matsuri, Aki Rosenthal, Oozora Subaru, Tokoyami Towa, Momosuzu Nene, Hakui Koyori, Sakamata Chloe and Kazama Iroha. The project was conceived by Suisei as she wished to make activities proper of a big idol group including activities such as pratice routines. The unit was revealed on 6 November 2023 and their first practice stream was on 13 November.[89][90]

- Sora's change of eye color is officially explained as wearing color contact lenses. Brown is her natural color, and the blue eyes are contacts.
Likes and dislikes
- She likes drawing, singing, playing the piano, sweet things and cats, she claims to be bad at sports like running and swimming.
- Her favorite subjects are Japanese and music but she claims to be bad at English and science.[91] Trying to improve her English, Sora started doing English study streams on 10 December 2020.[92]
- Sora is close friends with AZKi. They have sung on stage, in MVs and in EPs multiple times as the unit SorAZ. While it is somewhat rare for AZKi to collab with other hololive members, the two collab from time to time in each other's channels. Sora also helped her when AZKi finally decided to join the hololive JP Minecraft server.[93]

- Sora takes care of a cat from her uncle, named Momo-chan (sometimes called Faminyan). She's a 7 year old female Scottish Fold cat.[94]
- Sora drew the first known version of A-chan as a roughly-drawn woman's face with glasses and a hair tie. "Sora Records" refer to this form as "A-bean."[95]
- In February 2024, Sora asked people to also add a new hashtag which is #そらArt to help her search for proper arts easier due to the release of OpenAI's SORA tool.[96]
